Option blocks for our new year 12 will be created in the spring 2027, once students’ applications have been received. 

The application process will being after half term with the Sixth Form Open evening, Thursday 5^th November at our St John’s site, after which the application form will be made available to students.

Admissions criteria

Admissions criteria are in place to support students in making the correct choices for them.  At Magdalen, our criteria are:

• An average points score of 4 (APS of 4) across all GCSEs take
• GCSE grade 4 in either Mathematics or an English; students will re-sit the other
• Plus a grade 4 at GCSE for chosen A level subject, if studied at GCSE

Entry onto Science courses (including psychology)

• Higher tier papers for Sciences
• Minimum 6 6 combined science GCSE (was 6 5)
• Minimum 6 6 from the 3x Triple Science GCSEs with 6 in chosen A level

Entry onto MFL

• Higher tier paper at GCSE
• Minimum grade 6 in chosen language

Entry onto Maths related courses (Maths, Further Maths, the Sciences, Economics)

• All require higher tier paper in GCSE Maths
• All require minimum Grade 6 GCSE Maths
• Further maths requires minimum grade 7 GCSE Maths

Applications

Following receipt of students’ applications, option blocks will be created that ensure the majority of students can study their personal preferred combination of subjects.  Students will be asked to choose 4x subjects in order of preference, and every endeavour will be taken to ensure that they can study 3 of these. If this does not prove possible within the created option blocks, we will contact each student individually to discuss their choices.
